Despite what some might think, Earth Day isn't dead. It's evolving.
Today’s world is a much different place than it was when Earth Day was first celebrated 41 years ago. We’re lucky to live in a world where, more and more, making environmentally friendly decisions is becoming the norm, not the exception.
What’s more, consumers actually now expect corporations to not only make great products, but also be socially responsible and do good for the community and the environment.
This expectation is driving companies to operate differently. Our goal at Levi Strauss & Co. is to make every day Earth Day.
We’re focused on building sustainability into everything we do – from our products to our stores to how we make our clothes. We strive to be conscious of our environmental footprint 365 days a year because we know that the environmental issues facing us as a society are substantial and demand real solutions. It’s vital for companies to step up to this challenge and embed the philosophy of Earth Day into their daily operations.
But despite the shifting social responsibility landscape, annual celebrations like Earth Day are still a relevant way to engage with employees and consumers around the world.
Last month, on World Water Day, the Levi’s® brand partnered with Water.org to to raise awareness about vital water issues and challenge consumers globally to change their water use habits. From an interactive digital Facebook game to education in our stores and offices, the global celebration provided the perfect opportunity to rally consumers and Levi Strauss & Co. employees to take action on this important issue.
We also won’t let Earth Day pass quietly. On April 22 we’ll launch two programs for our employees: year-round Goodwill collection bins for employee donations and a bike drive to collect employees’ unused bikes for a local community organization aimed at repairing bikes for youth.
Earth Day is far from dead – as you can see, its inspiration lives strong within our company each and every day.
