“In the voting booth, everyone is equal.”
- Barbara Boxer
That quote says it all. Once all the money has been spent and all the words have been spoken – trying to sway your vote – the final decision is yours.
Rich or poor, brown, black or white, gay or straight – in the voting booth, each of us is equal. That means an impoverished, 18-year-old student wields as much power as a person of privilege.
This Tuesday, the United States will hold a General Election. We’ll choose not only a President and Vice President, but also members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Where I live, we’ll also vote for candidates in a number of state and local races and on several ballot measures.
Some choices are easy, others can be complicated and confusing. In some cases, voting “no” allows something to happen, and voting “yes” means it’ll stop. Needless to say, it takes a little time and effort to prepare. But it’s worth it.
At Levi Strauss & Co., we don’t tell our employees who – or what – to vote for. But we encourage them to vote. And if they’re unable to make it to the polls during non-working hours, we give them paid time off to vote. It’s that important.
I hope you’ll make time to vote. Even if it’s pretty clear which way your state is leaning in the Presidential election, there are probably plenty of other candidates and issues on your local ballot that need your attention.
And remember, in the voting booth, you have no more power than me. And I have no more power than you. That’s a pretty cool thing about a democracy.
