My love for fashion and design started at a young age when my mom taught me how to sew. Growing up, and even throughout college while I studied neuroscience, I knew I needed an outlet to express my creativity. At the time, I didn’t have a TV, so the sewing machine and stereo became the faithful companions to my design and clothes-making. I created my own tube tops and stretch cropped pants using fabric from the store across the street, and even once made a cocktail dress out of cocktail napkins!
Though I don’t make my own clothes anymore, I’m able to exercise creativity through my work, overseeing design of women’s pants, shorts and skirts at Levi Strauss & Co. And, because our dress code here is casual, I can wear my favorite skinny Levi's® jeans in stretch selvedge – and express my personal sense of style through what I wear.
I can’t say that I have a typical work outfit, but today I am wearing my vintage 646 Levi's® jeans and channeling Linda Evans vacationing in Bolinas in the Spring of ‘73. Another summer look I love for work is the open-neck tee, tucked in with high-waisted shorts in vintage wash and mid-heel d’Orsay shoes. For a more hippie and weekend look, I’d trade in the tee for a peasant blouse, and pair it with wooden platform sandals – what I’d wear knocking around town, cruising down Valencia on my bike.
Because the weather in San Francisco can be so fickle, I’ve discovered that dressing in layers is key! On days that are sunny and warm, I‘ll wear my favorite woven, above the knee vintage-inspired dress. And just in case it’s hot enough for the beach, I throw on a bathing suit underneath – but I wouldn’t be dressing smart if I didn’t bring my trucker jacket with me.
Having the ability to dress in my personal “high-low” style, which combines vintage and modern designs, at work and at play is so refreshing, and really helps me stay inspired. Gone are the days of the handmade cocktail-napkin cocktail dress and tube tops – but my stereo and sewing machine still dutifully accompany me as I dedicate my passion in design conception and fit for Levi’s® women’s apparel.
