Chinese New Year, Singapore-style

Imagine this: A group of people, about to have lunch, stand up from their seats. Salad ingredients start to fly. Auspicious Chinese phrases fill the air. Chopsticks are dropped (or should I say, thrown) into the giant salad bowl. Food falls on hands and arms on its way back down to the salad bowl. And aim for height while tossing! The higher the food is tossed into the air, the more fortunes for the coming year!

I’ve just described my first lo hei (prosperity toss), which is a unique tradition in Singapore and Malaysia that takes place during Chinese New Year. At our Singapore office’s Chinese New Year celebration, I was lucky to partake in this fun and rowdy tradition.

The lo hei salad dish is served as the first course in a multi-course meal for Chinese New Year. The dish consists of 27 different ingredients, including white radish, jellyfish, carrots and raw salmon, and it's tossed with savory sauces. Each ingredient symbolizes something different – like carrots for good luck, shredded radish for eternal youth, and fish for abundance.

No wonder this dish has been debated to enter into the Unesco's Intangible Cultural Heritage list!

The lo hei is as multi-colored as my experience so far in Singapore, where I’m working on assignment at our Asia Pacific headquarters. It’s been only one month since I’ve been here, but already I see the value of working amongst multi-ethnic, multi-national colleagues – to gain fresh perspectives, and new ways of collaborating.

I feel so lucky to be part of a company that provides these amazing global work opportunities. Coming to the Singapore office and working with my Asia Pacific colleagues has put a new definition to “diversity” and takes “global mindset” to another level.

I’m excited to bring a little bit of San Francisco flavor to the Singapore office. But even more so, I’m eager to learn from such a colorful, diverse team…And have fun doing it!
