The Birth of Your Blue Jeans

Your blue jeans were born on Monday.

By that I mean the patent for the original blue jean was issued May 20 – back in 1873.

Levi Strauss partnered with tailor Jacob Davis on the patent, which was for riveted pockets on work pants. The rivets made the pants stronger, ready for the hard work of building the American West.

The Levi’s® 501® jean was the original and first-ever blue jean. Born 140 years ago.

I doubt Messrs. Strauss and Davis had any idea what would become of their little invention. And even if you’re not wearing the 501® -- or, for that matter, Levi’s® -- your jeans owe their existence to that original, first-ever jean.

We call it The Uniform of Progress. Check out what we mean, here:

Happy Birthday, Levi's! My pants of choice for over 50 years. If you ever need a "loyalty guy", look me up!

Editor's note: Thanks, Michael. We appreciate your loyalty. It means the world to us.

You are so very lucky to be an "heir" to this history and the best blues jeans.

Editor's note: Thank you, Bruce. You're so right. It's a privilege to be able to work here and care for the Levi's® brand.
