Editor’s note: Next week is Bike to Work Week in the U.S. In Levi Strauss & Co.’s hometown of San Francisco, we get a head start. The city observes Bike to Work Day today. We asked daily bicycle commuter Trevor Dawson, Graphic Design Manager for Levi’s® Brand Marketing, to tell us about his two-wheeled commute.
I’ve been biking to work since October. Before that, I lived much closer to the office and I walked. It’s about a three-mile ride each way, and since it’s San Francisco, I battle a few hills both ways, plus a lot of headwind on the way home. Still, it’s a lot of fun.
I haven’t owned a car in this city for a while. If you’ve visited here, you know parking is hard to come by, and I had my share of parking tickets. Plus the cost of public transportation has gotten steeper and steeper over the years, while the number of routes shrinks, making the bus more and more challenging.
For the most part, I try to play it safe on the road, but it does get a bit nasty out there when it rains. I had a close call on a turn one time, sliding across a gutter grate in the middle of traffic. I didn’t take a dive, and I didn’t get hit, but my heart did start pounding.
I take that corner more slowly now.
But you don’t need a near accident to get the blood pumping. Starting your day with a little adrenaline rush is better than coffee! I’m guilty of a few downhill sprints here and there.
I don’t consider myself an evangelist for biking to work. It just makes sense for my circumstances, and I enjoy it. And while I don’t expect everybody to do it, if anyone is curious, I’d certainly encourage them to give it a go.
And it can be entertaining: I’ve fallen off my bike from time to time because I forget to unclip my cycling shoes when I come to a stop. My co-workers get a laugh out of that.
See you on the road!

Riding a bike to work or walking is actually quite common in Europe. Imagine how much healthier people would be in this country if they walked or biked to work like you do! Hats off to you!
