In Appreciation - Richard C. Holbrooke

The death, Monday, of Ambassador Richard C. Holbrooke was felt around the world, including here at Levi Strauss & Co.

Ambassador Holbrooke galvanized the corporate HIV/AIDS movement as president and CEO of the Global Business Coalition. He led the organization from 2001 to 2009, a time of unprecedented global growth of corporate commitment to those in need and at risk from HIV/AIDS.

Simply put, Ambassador Holbrooke played a visionary role in bringing HIV/AIDS to the forefront of the global agenda.

This is a cause that is close to our hearts. In 2009, the Global Business Coalition honored Levi Strauss & Co. with its Richard Holbrooke Leadership Award for the company’s longtime leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It was a privilege to have our work recognized under his name.

Ambassador Holbrooke will be deeply missed. We join others around the world in extending our deepest sympathy to his wife, children and grandchildren.

The best tribute we – and others – can offer is continuing our steadfast efforts to end the global HIV/AIDS pandemic.

I never followed the actions of Ambassador Holbrooke while he was alive, but I have a new and profound respect for him posthumously. I only wish there were more people like him in the world. This article has inspired me to follow through with my plan to go into hospitals and institutions and work with alchoholics and drug addicts and show them an alternate way of life through leading by example like Richard Holbrooke. Thank you for inspiring me today. Lili Cook - Mother, Daughter, Employee, friend, student, volunteer.
