Our company’s hometown – San Francisco – just hosted one of its largest diplomatic gatherings since the signing of the United Nations charter more than 65 years ago.
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation – known as APEC – brought together nearly 3,000 delegates from 21 countries bordering the Pacific Ocean to promote trade and economic cooperation in the region. As part of the forum, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton convened leaders in government and business for the APEC Women and the Economy Summit.
Clinton’s keynote speech at the conference addressed the global status of women and the economy. Now, more than ever before, women play a critical role in the global economy – and in the apparel industry. Women make up three-quarters of the global garment workforce.
These women are not merely apparel workers, they can be agents of change. We know that when we empower them and support their efforts to improve their own lives, the results transform their communities and change workplace realities.
With these women in mind – and in celebration of women everywhere – we hosted a dinner at Levi Strauss & Co. headquarters, inviting both APEC summit delegates and influential San Francisco Bay Area women.
It was an extraordinary evening. Guests enjoyed incredible local cuisine from renowned chef Nancy Oakes, customized Levi’s® Curve ID styling sessions, a performance by the celebrated all-female Real Vocal String Quartet, and a look at the influence of women in our company’s history with our own historian, Lynn Downey.
The event provided an opportunity to reflect on how far women have come as contributors to the global economy. And it also allowed leaders to connect with each other and share new visions of a better reality for women workers in the future.
I felt honored to represent Levi Strauss & Co., a company that demonstrates its values of integrity and courage by challenging the status quo to make the world a better place. By the end of the evening, every one of these global leaders of change left with a perfect fitting pair of Levi’s® jeans -- the uniform of progress!

It is a nice gesture to have a perfectly fitted pair of Levi’s® jeans -- the uniform of progress, to every one of these global leaders of change at the end of the day.
