Why Does Women's Equality Matter?

In my line of work, I often get the question: “Why does equality for women and girls matter?”

To me, a world without equality for women and girls is like flying a plane with only one wing. To solve any of the issues of our day – from poverty alleviation to defending everyone’s human rights – we need to include all potential agents for change.

Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights (UAF), the organization I lead, is the only fund of its kind to provide time-urgent funding specifically for women’s human rights activists.

A Not-So-Small Donation

What do you think of when you hear the term “corporate donation”?

If financial gifts of tens of thousands of dollars come to mind, here’s another, simpler, but effective approach.

In Eugene, Oregon, employees here at our Levi Strauss & Co. office have long partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Emerald Valley. In fact, it’s been a partnership for more than 13 years now -- and an example of our company’s 160-year commitment to equality.

For Youth, From Poverty to Prosperity

After a day of school, Adriana would head over to San Francisco's AT&T Park, excited to grab her black visor, strap on her vending bag and hit the stands, hawking ice cream and hot chocolate to the sold-out baseball crowds. (Given San Francisco's unpredictable summers, hot chocolate can be a big seller.)

For Adriana, each shift at work meant increased savings towards her college education. Now that she’s attending San Francisco State University to become a therapist, she knows her hard work paid off.

A Summer to Remember

It wasn’t an exotic vacation that made this summer particularly memorable for me. Instead, it was the opportunity to work with 16 amazing interns who came from across the country to the Levi Strauss & Co. global headquarters in San Francisco.

The interns were from colleges as close as the University of California at Berkeley and as far away as Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. And I dare say we kept them busy, but as one – Felice Feit – shared after her experience, it was time well spent:

A Tight End for dENiZEN®

Jason Witten is starting his 10th year as a professional football player. He’s an All-Pro tight end who, in his career in Dallas, holds the team record for the most receptions ever.

Most. Ever. Dallas. That’s no small feat.

He’s also a dENiZEN® fan and the brand’s face for the fall men’s line.

Why did the brand choose Jason?

Go to Work

When Labor Day first became a legal holiday here in the U.S., it’s safe to say a lot of folks were laboring in Levi’s® jeans.

After all, that was back in 1894, 21 years after the original blue jean was invented by our founder, Levi Strauss, and his business partner, Jacob Davis.

It’s amazing to think how labor has evolved over the years. Our country is more urban now, less rural. But whether you’re a Texas cotton farmer like my uncle Vernon, or an urban commuter like so many of my work colleagues, Levi’s® jeans are still standard attire.

Revel in These

The first time I tried on my Levi’s® Revel jeans, I knew something was up. Literally.

I was feeling the jean’s liquid shaping technology. It lifts the seat, slims the inner and outer thigh, and flattens the stomach, according to Levi’s® women’s designer Jill Guenza, a member of the team that is the tour de force behind the jeans.

How does it work? Denim fabric that stretches in varying degrees holds you in shape where you need support the most.

When the Worlds of History Collide

Like many of my colleagues in archives and history, being a historian is not just my job, it’s also my vocation. Which means that I not only love to research and write about the history of Levi Strauss & Co., but also about other historical topics. Sometimes, these worlds collide in delightful ways.

One of my other interests is in the history of medicine in the San Francisco Bay Area. And while investigating two local institutions, I found connections to Levi Strauss & Co.

Supporting People Affected by HIV/AIDS in Brazil

Staff members from Grupo Incentivo a Vida and the Levi Strauss Foundation. Author Kim Almeida is in the back row, third from the left.

In a recent trip to Sao Paulo, I met Fernanda, a pro-bono lawyer who works with Grupo Incentivo a Vida, or GIV.

GIV is supported by the Levi Strauss Foundation to offer free legal aid to people affected by HIV/AIDS, with a focus on low-income lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

They Said What?

If asked, what would your child say you do for a living?

We just held the first-ever “Kids Take Over” day at Levi Strauss & Co. headquarters in San Francisco.

More than 200 children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other young relatives and friends of employees descended on Levi’s® Plaza to see the offices and enjoy lots of fun activities.
