Code Of Conduct – Key Documents

Global Sourcing and Operating Guidelines

Levi Strauss & Co.’s (LS&CO.) commitment to responsible business practices — embodied in our Global Sourcing and Operating Guidelines — guides our decisions and behavior as a company everywhere we do business. Developed in 1991, the guidelines which contain our code of conduct or Terms of Engagement (TOE) are the foundation of our responsible sourcing program. It was a groundbreaking document that has been improved upon over the years with the addition of specific environment protection requirements and strengthened freedom of association guidance, among other items.

Terms of Engagement Guide Book

In order to assist suppliers in understanding and complying with the TOE, LS&CO. developed the Terms of Engagement Guidebook which defines specific factory-level practices, policies and LS&CO. expectations. The TOE Guidebook also provides examples of violations, recommended remediation timeframes and specific actions required to address violations. The guidebook has proven helpful to suppliers seeking more specific guidance on the TOE as well as other stakeholders who have an interest in how we interpret and audit for compliance with our code of conduct.

Global Effluent Guidelines

In 1995, LS&CO. added specific standards for effluent from contract and owned-and-operated laundries to the TOE in an effort to improve human and environmental health in communities where we have a manufacturing presence.

Environment, Health and Safety Supplement to the TOE Guidebook

The Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Handbook was designed to provide additional guidance for our business partners on LS&CO.’s health, safety and environmental requirements. It is intended to be a guide for suppliers in the implementation of EHS management systems required by our Terms of Engagement and to supplement the information included in chapters 11 and 12 of our Terms of Engagement Guidebook.

Restricted Substance List

The Restricted Substance List (RSL) is an important part of the LS&CO.’s product stewardship program and identifies substances that the company prohibits for use in the production of our products. The RSL also includes concentration limits for certain substances that are not prohibited from use, but for which a specific, limited amount is allowed on the finished garment. Originally developed and implemented in 2000, the RSL was compiled with the help and oversight of experts in toxicology, dermatology, chemistry, regulatory research and the law in countries where we sell our products, and updated most recently in 2006.
