Sharing Factory Names and Locations
Until very recently, virtually every apparel brand, including Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&CO.), considered production locations to be confidential competitive information. Companies worked hard to find reliable suppliers that were able to meet their codes of conduct and deliver quality goods.
As codes of conduct became commonplace in the apparel sector, suppliers producing for multiple brands worked to meet the terms of as many codes. Some suppliers began to experience what they call "audit fatigue."
In October, 2005 LS&CO. released the names and locations of all active, approved owned-and-operated, contract and licensee factories that manufacture and finish Levi’s®, Dockers® and Levi Strauss Signature® products. Our list is current as of April 2007.
We took this step for the following reasons:
- We believe that making our factory list public will foster collaboration with other brands and lead to sector-wide improvement on supplier performance on codes of conduct. As part of our effort, we are reaching out to other brands and encouraging them to share their monitoring results in common factories and work together to focus our collective resources on making improvements in factories rather than duplicating monitoring efforts.
- By sharing our list of suppliers, we establish broad recognition of our suppliers’ efforts and ability to meet our Terms of Engagement (TOE). We hope that other brands will acknowledge and reward these suppliers with additional business.
- We believe that public awareness of our suppliers establishes a powerful accountability mechanism that will encourage them to maintain positive working conditions and continuously improve their performance on our Terms of Engagement
Our active factory base changes constantly. While we have made every attempt to include all active factories that have been approved under our TOE, there may be a small number of active, approved factories that are not reflected in the list.
It is important to note that the majority of factories we list are not dedicating 100 percent of their production capacity to LS&CO. (with the exception of our owned-and-operated facilities). In most cases, our contractors’ and licensees’ factories have any where from 5 to 50 percent of their production devoted to our products. Thus, the total number of active factories in a given country or region may not be indicative of our overall production volumes.
