A Heritage of Responsibility

Consistent with the heritage and values of the company, the grant making programs of Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&CO.) and the Levi Strauss Foundation (LSF) seek to alleviate poverty on behalf of women and youth in communities around the world where our employees and our contractors' employees live and work.

For over 50 years the foundation’s grant making has supported innovative and risk-taking social change initiatives. LS&CO.’s history of philanthropy dates back to the earliest days of the company – more than 150 years.

Our strategic initiatives range from funding an organization that provides legal aid services to migrant women workers in China to funding a program that provides financial incentives for low-wage earning women and youth in San Francisco to save so that they can buy a home, start a small business or further their education.

Our Mission

We seek to reflect the voices of the communities where LS&CO. has a business presence and make a difference by addressing tough social issues and empowering people to solve their own problems and those of their communities. Through our work we aspire to influence employees, retail customers, consumers and grantees to work collaboratively to improve the well-being of communities worldwide. We believe this will contribute to positive social change and influence good corporate citizenship globally.

Three Guiding Principles

Three principles guide our global giving programs:

  • A belief in empowerment – women and youth have the right to identify their most important issues and to participate in solving them.
  • A resolve to address social biases and their impact on women and youth whether due to racism, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia or HIV/AIDS status.
  • A commitment to work collaboratively with other funders and to encourage the collaborative efforts of our grantees.
