Timeline

2009—Extended our Global Effluent Guidelines (GEG) to second-tier suppliers of bulk fabric and sundry items.

2008— Articulated new, company-wide environmental vision: “We will build sustainability into everything we do, so that our profitable growth helps restore the environment.” Based on a lifecycle assessment approach, the new vision focuses our efforts on energy/climate change, water, chemical use, and materials efficiency.

2008—Joined BICEP (Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy) as a founding member.

2008—Updated Restricted Substances List (RSL) to include a list of substances that should be phased-out by factories to promote environmental sustainability.

2008—Joined the Better Cotton Initiative to work with farmers, NGOs, and other companies to improve cotton sustainability.

2008—Extended Greenhouse Gas Inventory (for 2007 calendar year) to all of our owned and operated locations worldwide.

2008—Began water footprint analysis, leading to water reduction activities in our distribution centers and owned manufacturing facilities.

2008—Donated 200,000 pairs of recycled jeans to insulate the new California Academy of Sciences building in San Francisco.

2007—Performed lifecycle assessment of Levi’s® 501 jeans and Dockers® Original Khakis, producing the first “cradle-to-grave” assessment of environmental impacts of our most popular clothes.

2007—Conducted first Greenhouse Gas Inventory (for 2006 calendar year) of our owned and operated locations in our Americas region.

2007—Helped launch the CEO Water Mandate, a unique public-private initiative assists companies in the development, implementation and disclosure of water sustainability policies and practices.

2006—Introduced eco jeans primarily made with organic cotton or recycled denim and distributed with recycled packaging.

2002—Expanded our European RSL to a global Restricted Substance List outlining all chemical restrictions for materials, parts, end product, and other goods manufactured, sourced, and sold anywhere in the world.

2001-Created European Restricted Substance List (RSL), addressing EU chemical requirements for materials, parts, end products and other goods.

1999—Field to Fashion Cotton Conference—Convened apparel industry educational conference focusing on environmental issues of cotton production.

1994—Introduced Cotton Tab Elements made from recycled polyester fleece, organic cotton, and natural dyes.
